# Codex CLI ACP Setup

Codex CLI ACP setup: run Codex CLI over the Agent Client Protocol and connect it to AgentRQ for human-in-the-loop task management.

[Codex CLI](https://developers.openai.com/codex/cli) is OpenAI's coding agent for the terminal. It speaks ACP through the community `codex-acp` adapter, so it can run behind AgentRQ's gateway with no custom integration code.

Wondering which other coding agents support ACP? See the [ACP support table](https://agentrq.com/blog/which-coding-agents-support-acp-agent-client-protocol) for 33 agents.

Want Codex CLI to use websites too? [Connect Codex CLI to WebMCP](https://agentrq.com/docs/webmcp/codex-cli) shows how it can call a site's WebMCP tools in your own Chrome.

## Does Codex CLI Support ACP?

Yes, via the `codex-acp` adapter, which wraps Codex's own `codex app-server` protocol and exposes it as a standard ACP server that any ACP client — including AgentRQ's gateway — can talk to.

## What Connecting via ACP Gets You

Once Codex CLI is bridged through AgentRQ's [ACP Gateway](https://agentrq.com/docs/connect-acp-agent), every task it works on shows up on your AgentRQ [task board](https://agentrq.com/features/task-board) in real time. You can approve risky commands, reply with extra context, or reassign work — from the dashboard or Slack — without touching the terminal Codex is running in.

## Connect Codex CLI

Point the gateway at your workspace with a `.mcp.json` in your project root:

json

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "agentrq": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://WORKSPACE_ID.mcp.agentrq.com/mcp?token=TOKEN"
    }
  }
}
```

Then log in once (the first run also downloads the adapter):

bash

```bash
npx @agentrq/acp-gateway@latest --login --agent codex-acp
```

And start the bridge:

bash

```bash
npx @agentrq/acp-gateway@latest --agent codex-acp
```

See the [ACP Gateway guide](https://agentrq.com/docs/connect-acp-agent) for the full ACP setup walkthrough.

## FAQ

**Does Codex CLI work with AgentRQ?**

Yes — Codex CLI connects to AgentRQ through the `codex-acp` ACP adapter and the open-source [ACP Gateway](https://agentrq.com/docs/connect-acp-agent).

**How do I connect Codex CLI to AgentRQ?**

Save your workspace's `.mcp.json` in your project root, log in with `npx @agentrq/acp-gateway@latest --login --agent codex-acp`, then start the bridge with the same command minus `--login`.

**What is the Agent Client Protocol (ACP)?**

ACP is an open, editor-agnostic protocol that lets any coding agent talk to any client over a standard JSON-RPC interface. AgentRQ's gateway implements the client side of ACP, so any ACP-compatible agent — including Codex CLI — can use AgentRQ as its human-in-the-loop task manager.
