# Autonomous Workflow

An **autonomous workflow** is a multi-step process that runs from its trigger to its result without a person approving the steps in between. Once it starts, it reads, decides and acts on its own, and a human sees the outcome rather than each action along the way.

## What Autonomous Workflow Means

"Autonomous" describes how much of the work happens without human sign-off. It says nothing about who designed the steps. An autonomous workflow can follow steps fixed in code (a nightly pipeline that pulls data, summarizes it and posts a report) or let an [agent](https://agentrq.com/glossary/agent) choose its own steps (an agent that fixes failing tests overnight).

| | Human approves steps | No human approves steps |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Steps fixed in code | Supervised workflow | Autonomous workflow |
| Steps chosen by the model | Supervised agent | [Autonomous agent](https://agentrq.com/glossary/autonomous-agent) |

## Autonomous Workflow vs. Agentic Workflow

An [agentic workflow](https://agentrq.com/glossary/agentic-workflow) is one where an AI agent plans and carries out multi-step work with tools. It becomes an autonomous workflow when the human checkpoints are removed. Every autonomous agent workflow is agentic, but an agentic workflow can still stop for approval at every step. The [blog post on autonomous agents vs. agentic workflows](https://agentrq.com/blog/autonomous-agents-vs-agentic-workflows-the-real-difference) covers the distinction in depth, including Anthropic's agents vs. workflows framing.

## Keeping Control of Autonomous Workflow Execution

Autonomy is safest when it is granted step by step instead of all at once:

- → **Gate the irreversible steps only.** Let reads and edits run, and require an [approval](https://agentrq.com/glossary/approval) for deploys, deletions and anything sent to customers.
- → **Keep each run scoped.** One task, one workspace, a clear finish line.
- → **Record everything.** A full history of tool calls makes an unattended run reviewable after the fact.
- → **Escalate instead of guessing.** A good autonomous workflow stops and asks when it hits something outside its instructions.

## Autonomous Workflows in AgentRQ

AgentRQ [workflows](https://agentrq.com/features/workflows) chain agents across workspaces with events, so each stage starts automatically when the previous one finishes. Every task can run with approvals on or in [YOLO mode](https://agentrq.com/features/yolo-mode), and the [tool call history](https://agentrq.com/features/tool-call-history) shows what an unattended agent actually did.
